Learn how story typing and narrative intelligence tools can help any client name, claim and unlock their core motivational power

We all love stories—but they do far more than entertain or amuse us.  Narratives capture the patterns of meaning and motivation that define almost everything that goes on within and around us.  The characters or story types we relate to most (as individuals or as a collective) offer profound clues about who we are, what we believe and how we’ll behave.

Coaches and consultants who work with story typing and narrative intelligence learn how to help clients quickly see who they are at their most vital, engaged and effective.  They also master ways to recognize and work with the dynamics that most shape individual or group identity, meaning, motivation, contribution and outcomes.

Join us to discover how story-based motivational theory can dramatically energize your coaching or consulting impact.

A training program for imaginative, intuitive, insightful coaches and consultants

This Story Typing and Narrative Intelligence Tools training is for any coach or consultant who wants to understand and work with the surprisingly simple, story-based dynamics that shape client identity, purpose, performance and contribution. It will help any practitioner work with clients to translate insights about who they really are into the foundation for inspired and energized action.

  • Branding/Culture Consultants: Work with your clients to help them create an energizing, inspiring sense of identity—and a shared story that can bring it to life inside their cultures

Learn how to help every client see who they really are and what direction that suggests via 12 distinctive story types that define a “best self” and a powerful “supporting cast” of characters for any individual, team or organization!

Help your clients instantly access and activate an empowering story type

Most of us relate more to some characters than others in books, movies and television shows.  We’re fascinated by who they are, what they can do and how they show up in the world.  It turns out those characters are a lot like us at our best and most authentic. Seeing ourselves through this empowering lens helps us focus on the same strengths and values that make those characters great—and activate what’s most unique, successful and valuable about us.

Story typing makes that process tangible instead of abstract.  We all understand the difference between a Magician’s quest for transformation and a Creator’s capacity for innovation.  Story typing allows your clients to see how much they’re like these or any of the 12 most compelling characters in great stories—and understand what they can most authentically stand for and deliver in their professional lives.

The tool for doing this–The Professional Strengths, Values and Story Survey (SVSS)–is a 96-item typological tool that quantifies how much individuals or team members relate to the strengths, values and motivational drivers of these 12 very memorable and resonant characters.

Coaches and consultants who work with story type have an intuitive, holistic method for helping their clients leverage what’s best about them—and to approach both challenges and opportunities in ways that come most naturally and easily to them.

What sets story typing and the SVSS tool apart?

Most methods and tools that coaches and consultants work with focus on either individual/team strengths or values; capacities or beliefs; talents or passions.  They tend to feel pretty left brained or fairly right brained.  They often come across as either concrete or conceptual.

Story typing offers a both/and approach because real people in the real world are whole beings shaped by a dynamic combination of strengths/skills/brain power and values/passions/ emotions.  Those are the same things that drive every beloved character in every story we remember and retell.   Coaches and consultants who are most effective at developing individuals and teams help them tap into their heads and their hearts.  Story typing packages that up for them into a meaningful whole.  Some of the benefits include:

What’s narrative intelligence?

So let’s get to the brain science part of this program overview!  Cognitive neuroscience tells us that the human brain has an innate ability to shape fragments of information and experience into patterns that add up to something.  Most often, these hard-wired patterns look like narrative structures that allows us to make meaning of what’s going on inside and around us.  While all of us do this unconsciously, we can develop ourselves as better professionals, leaders and human beings if we learn how to make the process more conscious.

We all have story-based, narrative-driven motivational patterns. The difference in them is what makes us unique and compelling.  It’s also what can lead to misunderstanding and devaluing of people and groups who don’t share our patterns.  Learning to consciously read and productively respond to these patterns in ourselves and others is a core professional competency called narrative intelligence.

Coaches and consultants who learn to do this can understand and work with their clients much more effectively.  It’s an actual game changer for helping them make better choices for themselves and interact more productively with others as well.

Leadership, Transitions & Team Coach | Training Facilitator | Branding, Culture Development & Engagement Consultant

When I was a kid devouring pretty much every book in sight, I thought I’d be a novelist when I grew up. As an adult, I realized it wasn’t the craft of writing that I loved so much.  It was getting to know the fascinating characters who lived in great books.

I loved finding out what they were like, what made them tick, what they were capable of, what they were most passionate about—and how they mattered in the world.  I never became a novelist, but that early inspiration has everything to do with my actual career helping clients see and show others their best, most vibrant and valuable selves.

The story typing method and tools can any help any coach, consultant or facilitator do that, too. I hope you’ll join me to learn how easily your clients can cast themselves in a meaningful, motivating role that will lead to greater engagement, confidence and contribution.
